“Sudden Wells” first performance – Féile na Bealtaine
Sudden Wells is a new solo piano/electronics and song project that I began work on early this year, and which I got an opportunity to develop while on a residency at Cois Tine Soundscapes in Cavan. The desire to return to solo piano writing and performance was strong in me through the composition of the past few larger-scale ‘classical’ works, not least because it was at the root of my initial love for music. It has been a joy to spend more time at the instrument, and the period in Cavan was a luxury in allowing me to focus on a non-commissioned project for a few weeks and to find a sound that suited. Much of the electronic material is built from found sounds from around the area, and I was also particularly interested in learning local folk tunes of the Breifne and Oriel traditions, allowing the music to spring from these as from hidden wells.
I am being joined in this project by my long-time collaborator Luca Truffarelli, who has build visual imagery around the music, taking influence from the minute movements of the nature around my cottage, making the everyday seem ethereal and otherworldly. The project is being produced by Homebeat, and will have its first outing at Féile na Bealtaine in Dingle on the May Bank Holiday weekend.
More performances will be announced for later in the year.
